(NON)FUNCTIONAL

This sculpture reflects on the harsh realities of labour and the human-machine relationship in industrial environments. Centred around a barrel as a found object with metal spikes and plaster chains, (NON)FUNCTIONAL explores themes of societal failure, exploitation, and resilience. While informed by personal history, it extends beyond individual experience to highlight systemic issues within factory work and the dehumanizing aspects of production.

The creation of (NON)FUNCTIONAL was an intensive two-month process, with a particular focus on crafting the chains and spikes. Each element was meticulously sculpted out of plaster, a material chosen for its fragility and a stark contrast to the strength implied by their form. The chains were then coated with graphite powder, giving them a metallic sheen that reinforces the visual language of industrial labour while retaining the vulnerability of the material. This careful, labour-intensive process mirrors the themes of the sculpture, embodying the tension between strength and fragility, function and dysfunction.
