Trigger Warning: Camera Is Shooting

Trigger Warning: Camera Is Shooting is a video piece inspired by a powerful statement from artist Bill Viola, reflecting on the immense influence of media and the camera. Viola remarked that, with a camera, “I could erase an entire race of people, a whole population, intentionally, or a body of information I don’t want to be told.” This quote highlights how recording devices can act as tools of control, manipulation, and influence with the simple press of a button.

In today’s world, where surveillance and social media dominate, Viola’s words resonate even more intensely. Trigger Warning: Camera Is Shooting explores this dual nature of cameras—objects that both capture and shape reality. The installation presents me, the camerawoman, as a figure who “shoots” with cameras as if they were guns. Drawing on my experience from childhood, with video games and Hollywood films that glamorize weaponry, the piece blends this imagery with a critical lens on the nature of media.

Using a variety of cameras, from 8mm and 16mm film cameras to VHS, mini DV, webcams, and CCTV, Trigger Warning immerses viewers in a layered critique of media and technology, questioning who holds the power to frame the story, and how.
